Services

HISTON FOOT CARE offers a range of services, each tailored to meet the specific needs of patients.  Age is not an issue, although most fall in the 8 - 100 year old band!  The Histon-based clinic offers a waiting room with comfortable seating and a separate toilet, and can accommodate the width of standard wheelchairs, if necessary.  Alternatively, treatment can be in the comfort of your own home, and will be agreed at the time of booking an appointment on the phone.

Please read the information below to get a better idea of common conditions and how they are treated.  Please note, however, that other conditions will be looked at too for assessment and consideration of an appropriate treatment plan.  If this is not possible, guidance will be given regarding other practitioners who may be able to help.

Healthy Nails

There can be many reasons why nails get out of hand.  Age, immobility, illness, busy lives, to name a few.  However, there is no time like the present to  start a healthier approach to nail care. Treatment plans will include assessing the overall health of nails, and agreeing what steps to take to overcome any presenting issues.  It may be simply trimming them to a good length, using Nail Nippers and a range of files. However, treating problems like fungal nail, or thickened nails, might also involve the use of a nail bur, an electrical instrument commonly used to reduce the nail to a healthier state.

Please rest assured that in the unlikely event that there is a serious problem beyond the scope of the clinic, you will be referred to someone who has the capacity to help you.

Tools for the job

Histon Foot Care does not take any chances!  All equipment is sterilised in advance via a state-of-the-art autoclave to meet medical standards.  Each patient will have a newly cleaned set of instruments.  Treatment takes place within a 'clean field' where every attempt will be made to ensure cleanliness against the inappropriate transmission of bacteria or viruses.  Gloves and a face-mask, plus industry-standard sanitisation are all used, as you might expect.

Skin Conditions

Are you one of those people who has been quietly suffering  with hardened skin, Callus, or Corns on your feet?  Perhaps you  have itchy, peeling skin, cracks in your heels, or between your toes?  Close examination of your condition will help move towards an accurate diagnosis where appropriate treatment can be discussed and a plan of action can be agreed.

Treatment might include fluids applied to the skin to soften it; filing or the use of a scalpel to remove excessively hardened skin; and moisturiser to help keep tissues soft.  In some cases, a medical dressing may be applied to help keep pressure off sensitive regions, and recommendations to help you help yourself following treatment.

VERRUCAE

Sometimes, patients wonder if a condition that is bothering them on their feet is actually Verrucae. On the other hand, they may not even realise that this is the presenting condition, perhaps mistaking it for hard skin Callus, or Corn.  It is easily done.  Having your feet assessed at Histon Foot Care might help to clear up confusion, followed by agreeing on a treatment plan.

Currently, there is no capacity at Histon Foot Care for Cryotherapy, Laser, or Microwave treatment to combat the positive identification of Verrucae. However, paring away troublesome hard skin, is possible, as well as discussing occlusion techniques and potential topical applications.

RELAXATION & EDUCATION

When you have your treatment, the intention is for you to feel that you are doing something good.  You are looking after your well-being and helping to keep your feet in the best condition you can.  Ultimately, it is hoped that this helps to maintain, or perhaps improve, your current condition and whether you dance, skip, run, walk or shuffle from your session, the intention is for you to feel relaxed and safe in the knowledge that you know what is going on and how you can play your part in your own care.

You will be asked for your opinions, you will lead in decision making and your treatment will follow an agreed path. Discussions may also include advice on footwear, how to best look after your feet, and what to do if you are unsure. If appropriate, you will be referred elsewhere, to see someone with different skills to offer, but all with the intention of helping you to achieve the goal of healthier, happier feet!
